It may seem like there's a lot of pieces, and there is, but it's not overwhelming if you only work on one assembly at a time. There's only a few:
  1. Input shaft/rear clutch pack
  2. front drum and clutch pack
  3. front pump and reaction shaft
  4. rear drum, driving shell and a pair of planetary and annulus gears
  5. valve body
  6. case
As you're taking things apart, use ziplock bags to put all the pieces and bolts together as units and write on the bags what they're for. Wrap the shiny, machined parts in paper towels so they don't get scratched.

You only need a couple of special tools. To get the front pump out of the case, you'll need a slide hammer, but you can make do with a length of threaded rod, nut, washer and a heavy weight (I used a brick). The other is some kind of spring compressor for the front clutch pack; I used an old rear spring shackle, the same threaded rod I used to pull the front pump, and two short bits of square metal stock. I have three pictures: one, two, and three.

The only tool you'll absolutely need is a pair of snap ring pliers. My pair can change to open both kinds of snap rings. Or you'll need one pliers for the rings you stretch to open, and another for the ones you squeeze.
